We all know where I stand when it comes to traveling with your kiddos. I believe you should do it as early as possible and mix in as much diversity and variety as you can. Of course, travel looks different with your kids, but it’s more than possible if you are equip with the right tips and tools.
These are my top five tips for traveling with your kids, with some product recs sprinkled in:
- Travel where the entire family could find an activity to enjoy. While you want your kids to adapt to “adult” activities (we don’t want this to be a kids-only trip), plan a few kid friendly activities in the itinerary, like going to the local zoo or finding a playground.
- Pack very few books and toys, and if you do, pick the thinnest books and smallest toys for space and weight purposes. If your baby is teething, these Indestructibles Baby Books are super lightweight and literally indestructible. Packed items are for entertainment on travel days and during morning and evening routines. Plan to buy your kiddo a unique book or toy on the trip so they have a special memory of getting that item on their holiday.
- Pack as light as you can overall. Buy a travel stroller (my favorite). Adapt to a different bath time set up. Use a restaurant’s high chair. Find a laundromat. And your non-walking baby does NOT need shoes despite how “cute” they look. They’ll kick them off. Stick with socks that actually stay on: Squid Socks.
- The younger the kid, the easier to travel with. We took Sofia to the UK when she was 2.5 months old. All she did was eat and sleep so we weren’t limited in the activities we could do. Once your baby forms an opinion and starts using it, things get more challenging. But don’t forget: You’re in charge!
- Keep your routine while on the go. Kids are very adaptable and can eat and sleep wherever. Don’t let your kids dictate the schedule. Wear them out with overstimulation or running around a park so they crash in their stroller while you’re shopping or getting a drink in 😉
If you follow these top five tips for traveling with your kids, I can promise you your overall experience will be amazing, fun and not as overwhelming.
Now, off you go. Fear not!
